3 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Amalgam Fillings

Are you in need of tooth repair? Our SW Calgary holistic dentists recommend ceramic or composite fillings for our patients, rather than amalgam ones. If you are concerned about an existing amalgam filling, read on to learn more about our safe mercury removal protocol.

Silver coloured fillings, also known as amalgam fillings, contain approximately 50 per cent elemental mercury. Other components in amalgam fillings are silver, copper, and tin. Because mercury is a known neurotoxin, there is some debate about whether or not these fillings should be placed in the mouth.

In fact, exposure to large amounts of mercury has been linked to an increased risk of:

  • Thyroiditis
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Reproductive dysfunction
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Autoimmune disorders and deficiencies
  • Parkinson’s disease

Our SW Calgary Holistic Dentists Offer Comprehensive Dental Care That Protects Your Oral and Overall Health

At Dr. Korol Dental Clinic, our team of Calgary holistic dentists believe that there are less toxic materials that can be used to replace lost tooth structure. This includes ceramic or composite fillings and restorations, that are safer and more biocompatible options.

In addition to this, we offer a range of other dentistry services, including Invisalign treatments, emergency dental care, and safe removal of your amalgam fillings, to help enhance the aesthetics of your smile and protect your overall well-being.

3 Signs You Need to Replace Your Amalgam Fillings

Should I get my amalgam fillings removed and replaced with a more biocompatible filling? This is a very common question, and at our Calgary dental clinic, our team of holistic dentists prefer to use biocompatible materials that are safe, non-toxic, and natural.

Biocompatible materials are those that closely resemble your natural tooth structure and will help you avoid any potential harmful side-effects to your overall health.

If you have amalgam fillings, here are some telling signs that you may need to have them replaced:

1. Amalgam Fillings Can Cause Tooth Fractures

In the same way that mercury expands and contracts in a mercury thermometer, this too can happen in mercury amalgam fillings. Your filling may expand when you drink something hot, and contract when you have something cold. This pressure on your tooth may cause it to crack, fracture, or fall apart.

Are you experiencing sensitivity in your teeth?

If you had fillings placed some years ago, and those teeth start to show hypersensitivity to heat and cold, then it could be a sign of a cracked tooth. If the crack becomes deeper, your sensitivity will intensify, and you might even require a root canal treatment.

2. Amalgam Fillings Can Cause Decay

If your amalgam fillings are coming loose, then bacteria could be getting around them and into your teeth. That’s why, if you are experiencing any looseness, it’s important to get your amalgam fillings replaced straight away, especially if you can see visible decay.

Why? If this decay is allowed to continue, then the bacteria could get into the roots of your teeth, and you may require a root canal. Tooth sensitivity is a good indicator that this is occurring, and you should visit your holistic dentist as soon as possible to discuss the situation.

3. Amalgam Fillings Aren’t Aesthetically Pleasing

Amalgam fillings are silver-coloured and they can be seen when you smile and laugh. On the other hand, composite fillings are designed to be tooth coloured and are practically invisible.

If you are feeling self-conscious about the appearance of your amalgam fillings, then you might want to talk to your dentist about replacing them with more biocompatible and aesthetically pleasing material.
