5 Quick Facts About Biocompatible Dentistry

Have you been searching for next level dental care? Learn more about biocompatible dentistry and how this approach to oral care uses only dental materials, products, and techniques, that are in alignment with your health and well-being.

Traditionally, dentists would often repair a patient’s teeth, while ignoring the side effects of the treatment to the tissues and the body. However, in an increasingly toxic world, decreasing the use of dental materials and techniques that can have undesirable effects is becoming increasingly important.

Biocompatible dentistry is an approach to oral healthcare that aims to use the safest and most conservative materials to:

  • Reduce patients’ risk of oral conditions such as periodontal disease
  • Avoid chronic inflammation and infection
  • Lower patients’ risk of developing conditions such as heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, birth complications, and cancer.

Biocompatible Dentistry Protects Your Overall Well-Being

If you’re looking for dental care that takes a holistic, whole-body approach, then you may want to consider finding a dentist who practices biocompatible dentistry. By using only non-toxic and safe dental materials and techniques, this approach can ensure your teeth, gums, and the whole body remains healthy and strong.

The Philosophy of Biocompatible Dentistry

Biocompatible dentistry recognizes the intimate connection between mouth and body. Dentists who practice this approach view the body as a whole, and strongly believe that what occurs in the mouth will affect the body, and vice-versa.

What does this mean?

Because of this belief, biocompatible dentists take a proactive approach to oral healthcare that focuses on addressing the underlying causes of dental diseases, rather than just the symptoms.

Focus on Preventive Care

Instead of reactively dealing with the negative consequences of poor oral healthcare and lifestyle choices, biocompatible dentists seek to educate their patients and promote total health and wellness through nutrition and dental hygiene.

5 Dental Treatments & Materials That Biocompatible Dentists Avoid

Biocompatible dentists are very conservative about what materials they put in their patients’ mouths. This approach favours less invasive procedures, especially when less invasive, more natural means are available.

To give you a better idea of the biocompatible approach to dentistry, here are some chemicals and treatments biocompatible dentists typically DON’T favour.

  1. Amalgam Fillings - Traditional dentists may still place amalgam fillings, which contain approximately 50% mercury. Mercury is a known neurotoxin. Biocompatible dentists will not place amalgam fillings and offer safety protocols for amalgam removal. Biocompatible dentists will typically recommend composite or ceramic restorations. (4 Reasons to Replace Your Amalgam Fillings >)

  2. Fluoride - Biocompatible dentists will recommend alternatives to fluoride. While fluoride may harden tooth enamel, new studies are showing that it may have other negative systemic effects such damage to the thyroid and nervous system.

  3. Root canal -While prevention is key and it is always best to try and avoid the need for root canals, biocompatible dentists are open to discussing alternatives to root canal therapy, such and extraction and implant when necessary.

  4. Bisphenol A (BPA) - This is a compound found in many plastics, as well as in some composite alternatives to mercury amalgam fillings. That’s why many biocompatible dentists are careful about even the alternatives they use to amalgam fillings.

  5. X-Rays - Many biocompatible dentists prefer to use digital x-rays so that they don’t expose their patients to the harmful levels of radiation caused by traditional x-rays.
