The Dental Crown Procedure: What to Expect

A dental crown is a simple and very effective way of restoring the function and esthetics of your tooth. If your dentist has recommended a crown and you are considering this treatment, here is what to expect:

Visit 1: Preparing Your Tooth For the Crown

  • During the first dental crown visit, your dentist may need to take an X-Ray to check the root of the tooth receiving the crown and examine the surrounding bone. If decay is found, or there is risk of an infection, a root canal may be required first.
  • To prepare the tooth for the crown, the tooth is shaped. At our Calgary dental clinic, we always try to preserve tooth structure and remove as little natural tooth structure as possible. If too much of the tooth is missing due to damage or decay, then a filling material can be used to build up enough tooth structure for the crown to cover.
  • A putty is used to make an impression of the tooth being treated. Impressions of the upper and lower teeth are also taken to ensure the lab made crown will fit with your bite.
  • The impressions are then sent to a dental laboratory. While your permanent crown is being fabricated, a temporary crown will be placed to cover and protect the prepared tooth.

Visit 2: Fitting the Dental Crown

  1. During the second visit, the dentist will remove the temporary dental crown and check the fit and colour of the permanent one.
  1. If everything is acceptable, then a local anesthetic will be used to numb the treatment tooth and the new crown will be permanently cemented into place.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

A dental crown is a very durable and effective solution for decayed or damaged teeth and it can last up to 15 years. However, there are several factors that will affect the lifespan including:

  • Your oral hygiene routine
  • Lifestyle habits (eg. smoking, and diet)
  • Whether you grind your teeth
  • The amount of wear and tear the crown is exposed to

Caring For Your Dental Crown

Caring for your dental crown is similar to caring for your natural teeth. You should always:

  • Brush twice a day
  • Floss around the crown area, where the gum meets the tooth
  • Avoid sticky or hard foods
  • Use a night guard if you grind your teeth
  • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups
