Clenching and grinding, also known as bruxism, is a condition wherein you consciously or unconsciously (while sleeping) clench/grind/gnash or bite your teeth together for purposes other than eating. Clenching and grinding are common problems that can result in jaw pain, headaches, chipping, and tooth wear over time.
Common symptoms of bruxism
These include:
- Jaw pain.
- Chipped, broken, worn teeth.
- Dental pain or sensitivity.
- Tight, tender, painful jaw muscles.
- Headaches and TMJ pain.
- Traumatized soft tissues within the mouth.
- Sleep problems.
Treatment Options
These may include:
- Use of a nightguard or dental appliance to protect the teeth.
- Relaxation and stress-alleviating procedures.
- Dental treatment to improve alignment or occlusion of the teeth.
- Use of neuromodulators (ie. Botox/Xeomin) to help relax over-active jaw musculature.
