Sensitive Teeth

Tooth sensitivity, or dentin hypersensitivity, is a common dental symptom. It is defined as pain or discomfort in the teeth as a response to certain stimuli, such as hot or cold temperatures or sweets.

It can affect one tooth, several teeth, or a person’s entire dentition and can be either a temporary or chronic problem.

In many cases, dentinal hypersensitivity can be treated with good oral hygiene and a sensitivity or remineralization toothpaste. Oftentimes, sensitivity is caused by root exposure/gum recession. In more advanced cases, dental fillings and/or gum grafting may be required to treat the sensitivity.

Triggers For Sensitive Teeth May Include

  • Hot or cold foods and/or drinks.
  • Sweet or acidic foods and/or drinks.
  • Dental cleanings or dental home care.
  • Worn enamel or tooth structure.

Dental sensitivity may range from mild to severe and may come and go over time.

Treatments For Sensitive Teeth

  • Mild dental sensitivity can often be treated with over-the-counter dental treatments.
  • Remineralization or anti-sensitivity toothpaste help to seal the microscopic ‘pores’ within the tooth structure and decrease the painful sensation from the nerve over time
  • Choose toothpaste that’s labeled as being specifically made for sensitive teeth. These types of toothpaste won’t have any irritating ingredients and may have desensitizing ingredients that help block the discomfort from traveling to the nerve of the tooth.
  • Soft bristle toothbrushes and dental appliances such as a nightguard can also be effective in decreasing tooth wear over time and reducing the instance of dentinal hypersensitivity
  • If initial treatments are ineffective at reducing your sensitivity, speak to your dentist. A dental filling, dental restoration, or gingival grafting can sometimes be required.
