5 Questions to Ask Your Holistic Dentist

While views may differ among holistic dentists, in most cases, such professionals focus on preventative care that goes beyond just practicing good dental hygiene. Your holistic dentist will take the time to educate you on the importance of following a healthy lifestyle, advise you to quit smoking, and consume alcohol in moderation.

In addition, most holistic dentists use digital x-ray equipment that exposes patients to less radiation and they prefer to use only the most biocompatible materials when performing treatment.

Is your dentist truly holistic? Here are 5 questions you must ask to find out:

  1. What materials do you use for fillings? Holistic dentists avoid metals such as amalgam or nickel for fillings. Instead, they opt for composite resin, a more natural looking material that is safer for your oral and overall health.

  2. How do you treat gum disease? Holistic dentists aim to use non-surgical approaches to treat gum disease, such as through highly effective lasers to clear the area of bacteria.

  3. Do you recommend fluoride? Most holistic will offer alternatives to fluoride treatment. While fluoride has been used widely for decades as it was thought to prevent tooth decay, there are some concerns about it having harmful systemic effects (eg. possible damage to the thyroid gland) when swallowed. Today, most holistic dentists prefer more natural alternatives to fluoride, such as calcium phosphate, which can lower patients' risk for decay when used as directed.

  4. Do you always remove wisdom teeth? It seems that today, wisdom tooth removal has become a rite of passage for young adults, but did you know that it isn’t always necessary? If your wisdom teeth are correctly positioned, fully erupted, and not crowding your remaining teeth, a holistic dentist will not remove them.

  5. Do you perform root canals? A holistic dentist will be open to discussing the pluses and minuses of root canal therapy and the alternatives. There is no one right solution for everyone and patients should be educated as to what their options are in order to make the best and most informed dental health decisions for themselves.

At Dr. Korol Dental Clinic, we truly believe that your oral health is interconnected to your overall well-being. Our holistic dentists focus on whole-health wellness, from the use of our biocompatible materials to state-of-the-art dental techniques.
