A tooth abscess is a bacterial infection caused by a dead/ necrotic tooth or infected gum tissue.
What Causes Tooth Abscesses & Infections?
Tooth abscesses and infections can be caused by:
- Extensive tooth decay extending into the pulp chamber (center) of the tooth.
- A recent dental restoration (ie. a filling or crown) that is deep and close to the nerve inside the tooth.
- Gum disease/periodontitis that erodes the bone structure around the tooth allowing bacteria deeper into the surrounding tissues.
- Trauma to a tooth causing damage to the internal pulp tissue.
Treatment Options
A dental abscess will require dental treatment. Your dentist will determine the cause of the abscess and recommend an appropriate course of treatment. The goal of treatment will be to get rid of the infection and maintain the tooth if at all possible.
- If the nerve inside of the tooth is infected, the only option to save the tooth is a root canal.
- If you do not wish to have a root canal or if root canal treatment is not recommended, the only other option to eliminate the infection is to extract the tooth. These days, dental implants are a safe and effective treatment option to replace a missing tooth.
- If a tooth is infected and definitive treatment cannot be started right away, sometimes your dentist will prescribe antibiotics to get rid of the pain and infection until you can undergo treatment.
