Dental Crowns: Tooth Restoration

A dental crown is an restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth.

Dental crowns are an ideal way to repair teeth that have been broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling. They are extremely strong a durable and can last many years.

Causes of Dental Crowding

Dentists use crowns for a number of other reasons as well including:

  • Improving the appearance of a discoloured or misshapen tooth
  • Protecting a tooth after a root canal
  • Restoring cracked or worn down teeth
  • Covering a dental implant

At Dr. Korol Dental, we provide a range of effective restorative dental services including dental implants and crowns, using only the most biocompatible material to ensure the safety and longevity of your entire well-being.

DENTAL CROWN PROCEDURE

While the dental crown procedure is relatively simple and minimally invasive, it does require two separate visits to the dentist.

1st Dental Crown Appointment

The first dental crown appointment involves prepping the tooth for the crown.

This includes:

  • Shaping the tooth: The treated tooth must be given a slightly tapered form so that the crown can be slipped over it.
  • Taking an impression: An impression of your tooth is taken and sent to a dental lab where it is used to fabricate your customized dental crown.
  • Temporary crown: It usually takes about a week for the customized crown to be created so your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown to protect your teeth in the meantime.

Treatment Time: Approximately 1-2 hours

2nd Dental Crown Appointment

When you return for your second visit, the dentist will cement the finished dental crown into place. To ensure maximum comfort and the best aesthetic results, your dentist will carefully check:

  • The fit of the dental crown
  • The crown’s overall shape and colour

Treatment Time: Approximately 30-40 minutes

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?

Just as with a dental bridge or implant, a dental crown can last for many years although its longevity is affected by the amount of wear and tear it is exposed to as well as how well you keep its tooth free of plaque. Here are some of the reasons a dental crown may need to be replaced earlier than expected:

  • Damage - cracked or broken dental crowns
  • Excessive wear - Due to teeth grinding or accidental trauma
  • Poor dental hygiene - Such as plaque buildup and tooth decay

It is important to clean your dental crown just as you would your natural teeth. Remember to brush and floss daily to prevent any tooth decay.
