Wisdom Teeth Pain

Wisdom teeth or third molars can become painful if they become impacted or do not have enough room in the mouth to erupt properly. They are the last teeth in the mouth to emerge. It is common for people to have between zero and four wisdom teeth in the mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, and damage to neighbouring teeth and the gum tissues.

They are located at the very back of the mouth and can be difficult to keep clean. Therefore, even if they do erupt, can be prone to decay and gum disease. If wisdom teeth start to become painful or cause problems in the mouth, it is usually recommended to have them removed.

Wisdom teeth can be asymptomatic

If they start to cause pain or other issues within the mouth, common symptoms may include:

  • Inflamed, tender, bleeding gums.
  • Swelling.
  • Jaw pain and headaches.
  • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth.
  • Trouble chewing, eating or opening your mouth.

Treatment Options

  • Painful or problematic wisdom teeth are most commonly extracted.
  • Xrays are required to diagnose the difficulty of the extraction and locate other important structures (ie. nerves, neighbouring teeth, and air sinuses).
  • If your wisdom teeth are painful and you’re waiting to see your dentist, rinsing with salt water can be helpful in relieving pain. Ibuprofen can also be effective at decreasing pain caused by impacted wisdom teeth.
