Swollen or bleeding gums are often a sign of gum disease. Plaque and tartar buildup underneath the gums can cause the gums to become inflamed and/or infected.

Causes Of Sore And Bleeding Gums
Over three-quarters of the North American population suffers from some form of gum disease. Sore, bleeding gums are often indicative of gum disease. There are two major categories of gum disease:
- Gingivitis.
- Periodontitis.
- Poor oral hygiene/lack of brushing and flossing allows plaque to form on the teeth.
- Plaque is composed of a biofilm of bacteria that causes gum inflammation/infection and red and bleeding gums.
Treatment Options For Sore and Bleeding Gums
- Continue to brush and floss.
- Try rinsing with salt water or an antiseptic mouth rinse.
- See your dentist or dental hygienist for an evaluation.
If gum disease is caught early on, it is oftentimes reversible. A dental cleaning and probing exam will help to assess the health of your gums and the underlying jaw bone and your dental hygienist will be able to recommend further treatment options, if necessary.
