A toothache or tooth pain may be caused by:
- Dental decay
- An abscessed/infected tooth
- A broken, cracked, or fractured tooth
- A defective filling
- Excess pressure on a tooth caused by clenching and/or grinding
- Inflamed or infected gum tissue
Symptoms Of A Toothache
- Aching, throbbing pain radiating from a tooth
- Pain when biting on a tooth
- Headache or fever
- Swollen, puffy gum tissue around the tooth
Treatment For Toothaches
- If your toothache is severe, lasts more than 1-2 days, or affects your ability to eat, chew, or swallow, you should see your dentist for an examination. Your dentist will evaluate the problem and recommend a course of treatment.
- If there is decay or a cavity causing the toothache or if a tooth is chipped or broken, a filling or other dental restoration may be required.
- If the tooth is infected, a root canal or extraction may be required. Antibiotics may be prescribed to get rid of the pain and infection temporarily.
