6 Steps to the Safe Mercury Removal Procedure

Are you feeling concerned about an existing amalgam filling? Read on to learn about the safe mercury removal protocol at our Calgary dental clinic and some of the benefits of amalgam filling removal.

Removing and replacing your amalgam filling is an important step towards achieving total body health. In fact, replacing your old metal fillings with composite ones will offer many advantages, because composite fillings:

  • Are completely non-toxic
  • Will be covered by most dental insurance plans
  • Are strong and durable
  • Have natural colouring to match the shade of your tooth
  • Require removal of less natural tooth structure

Take a Common Sense Approach Towards Removal of Dental Amalgam

If you have an existing mercury filling, then it’s important to take a calm and common sense approach to your decision about removing them. Discuss your situation with your holistic dentist and they can help you determine the best way forward.

The Safe Mercury Removal Protocol At our Calgary Dental Clinic

The very first step to having a mercury-free mouth is to speak to your Calgary holistic dentist about the treatment options that work for you. At our dental clinic, our team follows the safest amalgam removal procedures set up by the IAOMT.

This is to reduce any mercury exposure and protect the health of our patients and staff. Here are some of the protocols we take to protect your health:

  1. Use of a Rubber Dam: Any teeth that require mercury amalgam removal will be isolated using a rubber dam. This is to minimize any chance of absorbing or ingesting mercury vapour.
  1. Use of a Cold Water Spray: All removals are performed under a cold water spray to provide adequate cooling. This will reduce any mercury vapour formation.
  1. Alternative Clean Air Source: All patients having mercury amalgam fillings removed will be given an alternative clean air source and will be instructed not to breathe through their mouth during the treatment. Clean oxygen will be given to you through a nasal cannula.
  1. Evacuation of Vapour From Treatment Area: A high volume evacuator tip will be kept near the tooth being treated at all times to evacuate any vapour from the area of the patient.
  1. Utilization of an Air Filtration Unit: Your possible exposure to toxic mercury vapours will be minimized using an air filtration unit, isolation practices, and other dental techniques.
  1. Particles of Mercury Alloy Will Be Washed Away: Any particles of mercury alloy will be vacuumed away as soon as they are generated. The filling will be removed in large pieces to reduce exposure.
