Calgary Custom Mouthguards

A mouthguard (or nightguard) is a protective device for the mouth that covers the teeth and sometimes the gums.

They are commonly used to prevent and reduce injury to the teeth during contact sports or as a treatment for temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) or nighttime bruxism (teeth grinding.)

At Dr. Korol Dental, our Calgary dentists are able to custom design a mouthguard to personally fit your set of teeth. This will provide the highest level of protection and are often much more comfortable than store-bought varieties.

Temporomandibular Joint Disorder & Mouthguards

TMJ occurs from the inflammation of the jaw muscles, which sometimes happens as a result of teeth grinding. If your dentist diagnoses you with TMJ, ask about a mouthguard.

A custom mouthguard will prevent you from grinding your teeth, thus reducing some of the pain and discomfort associated with temporomandibular joint disorder.

Sports Mouthguards

At Dr. Korol Dental, we provide high-quality custom mouthguards to ensure that you and/or your child has optimal protection during sports or other physical activities.

The best mouthguard for sports is one that is custom-made by your dentist. This ensures that the mouthguard is well-fitted to your teeth, giving optimal coverage.

Some of the incredible benefits of custom sports mouthguards include:

  • More secure and comfortable fit
  • Won’t impede your breathing or ability to speak
  • No need to bite down to keep the mouthguard in place
  • Protects dental appliances (braces/fixed bridge) and limit your risk of soft tissue injury
  • Less likely to pop out of the mouth during contact play or in a field collision
  • Children are more likely to consistently wear them because they are comfortable

The entire process of creating a custom mouthguard is quick and painless and only involves our dentist taking impressions of your teeth.

How to Care For Your Custom Mouthguard

A properly maintained mouthguard can help protect your teeth and jaws for many years. To ensure the longevity of your mouthguard, it is important to follow your dentist’s clean and care instructions. This can include:

  • Rinsing your mouthguard with cold water after every use and again before inserting it into your mouth.
  • Drying it thoroughly before returning it to the protective case
  • At least once a week, brushing your mouthguard with a soft toothbrush, soap and lukewarm water to disinfect it.

  1. Place your custom mouthguard in hot/boiling water for cleaning as this will alter its shape and fit
  2. Use alcohol based products for cleaning and soaking
  3. Use toothpaste on your mouthguard
  4. Eat while wearing your mouthguard as this will weaken its performance
