Calgary Dental Bridges

Your smile is one of your most important features and our Calgary dentists are committed to helping you keep it healthy, bright and beautiful.

One common procedure many patients get to maintain healthy teeth is a dental bridge. Like implants, dental bridges can help replace missing teeth by fixing a bridge onto neighboring teeth.

At Dr. Korol Dental, our dentists provide comprehensive dental crown and bridgework to enhance your smile and improve your quality of life.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a custom-fitted device which replaces one or more missing teeth. Bridges are anchored to either side of existing teeth with specially prepared dental crowns which help to hold the bridge in place.

A dental bridge has many benefits as it:

  • Replaces your missing teeth
  • Restores the function of your teeth such as chewing and eating properly
  • Prevents your remaining teeth from shifting and causing problems in your bite
  • Reduces the risk of bone loss and maintains your face structure
  • A bridge is permanently fixed, thus preventing it from moving around like dentures

How is a Dental Bridge Procedure Done?

The placement of a dental bridge is a two-step process and can be quite extensive. However, when performed by a qualified and experienced dentist, it is a safe and relatively pain-free treatment with long-lasting, incredible results.

Here is what is involved in a dental bridge procedure:

Foundation Work

Prior to the dental bridge treatment, your dentist will perform a complete examination of the area, take x-rays and prepare tooth cases.

Sometimes, preparatory work must be done before the bridge is created such as a root canal on adjacent teeth and this will be performed before beginning the dental bridge.
Preparing the Neighboring Teeth

A bridge is held in place by one or both teeth either side of the gap. These teeth need to be re-shaped to hold the bridge.

This involves:

  • The dentist will apply a local anesthetic around the teeth
  • The teeth are then filed down and reshaped to the required size in order to make space for the bridge
  • Once the preparation is complete, an impression is taken of the area. This is then sent to a dental laboratory to make the bridge.
  • It can take up to 2 weeks for the bridge to be constructed. During this time, your dentist may provide a temporary dental crown to fill in the gap.
Fitting the Dental Bridge
  • A local anesthetic is applied again, if necessary, before the treatment begins.
  • The temporary dental crown/bridge is removed and the dentist will clean the teeth.
  • The bridge is then fitted into place on the teeth and your dentist may make a few final adjustments to the bite to ensure you are fully comfortable.

Am I a Candidate for a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge treatment is designed for patients who have a badly damaged or missing tooth that cannot be restored with a dental crown or filling.

Ideally, dental bridge patients should:

  • Have good dental hygiene habits
  • Be free of gum disease
  • Not be suffering from tooth decay in any of the adjacent teeth

If you are wondering whether you are a candidate for dental bridges, our dentists will be happy to discuss your specific needs and help determine which tooth replacement option is best suited to fully restore your smile.

Dental Bridge vs Dental Implants

If you have lost one or more of your natural teeth, it is important to determine the best way to replace them as soon as possible.

If you are thinking of restoring a missing tooth, our dentists can help review your options before deciding whether a dental implant or bridge is the best option for you.

Dental Implant vs Dental Bridge: Pros & Cons

  • Both a dental implant and bridge will last for many years with the proper care and provide you with a natural look and feel.
  • The cost of dental bridges may be slightly less than dental implants
  • A dental implant is easier to maintain. A dental bridge requires a bridge threader or specialized tool for cleaning.
  • The risk of problems is greater with a dental bridge. For example, if an adjacent tooth begins to decay, you may need to replace the entire bridge. With a dental implant, only the affected tooth would have to be treated.
  • A bridge places more stress on the teeth it is placed on.
  • Dental implants inhibit the loss of jaw bone, maintaining your facial structure.

Reviews & Testimonials

My overall experience was superb!

From my initial booking, to the exam and dental work, to the cleaning I received, my overall experience was superb. Sarah (at reception) communicates clearly, is thoughtful, and is an overall pleasure. Dr. Korol and her dental team are proficient, professional, and very skilled at what they do. Additionally, their approach to dental care is natural and holistic, which is important and can be difficult to find. Thanks for everything!

I have been to several dentists over the years. Dr. Korol is my favourite one of all!

I have been to several dentists in three different provinces over the years. Dr. Korol is my favourite one of all. She has a happy and infectious personality and a big smile that lights up a room. Her staff are all also upbeat and very efficient. Sarah on the front desk is always trying to help and has lots of experience in making dental claims. I have had personal concerns about mercury fillings and it is a great relief to find a dentist who had solutions and specific training in natural or biological dentistry. I feel very fortunate to have come into contact with Dr. Korol and her practice.
