What is a Veneer?

Cosmetic dentistry offers many different ways to fix a broken, cracked or chipped tooth. One of the most effective methods is using a veneer.

A veneer is constructed from a small, thin shell of porcelain that is designed to fit perfectly over the front of your teeth. This is either to:

  • Improve the appearance of a broken/chipped tooth
  • Protect the tooth surface from any damage

Veneers are commonly made in porcelain in a shade of white customized to the patient. They are then bonded to the tooth using resin cement.

Am I a Candidate for Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are an effective solution to address a wide range of cosmetic dentistry problems including:

  • Worn, cracked or chipped teeth
  • Discoloured or stained teeth
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Unsightly gaps between teeth
  • Minor misalignment that may affect the appearance of your smile

However, not every dental patient is a suitable candidate for veneers. This cosmetic dentistry solution is NOT recommended for patients:

  • With severe malocclusion (misaligned bite)
  • Who suffer from teeth clenching or grinding
  • With insufficient tooth enamel
  • Who suffer from tooth decay

Before deciding on porcelain veneers, it’s important to schedule an appointment with a dentist as they can advise which cosmetic dentistry service best meets your dental needs.

How is a Porcelain Veneer Procedure Performed?

At Dr. Korol Dental, the veneer procedure is performed by a qualified, highly-experienced dentist in our Calgary dental clinic. The procedure generally includes these steps:

  1. You will sit in a reclining position in the dentist's chair. Typically, a clear shield is placed over your eyes to protect them from spraying liquids and dental equipment.
  2. If you require pain control, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic into the gum at the treatment site.
  3. Your dentist may reduce the thickness of your tooth by filing down some of the natural tooth structure
  4. If you are receiving porcelain veneers, an impression will be made of your teeth. This will then be used to create custom veneers and typically takes 1-2 weeks. ** Note: All our veneers are made from biocompatible material **
  5. Once the porcelain veneers have been created, the dentist will attach them to your teeth using a special cement.
  6. For optimum tooth bonding, a blue-light device will be held over your teeth to harden and set the cement and porcelain veneers.

How to Look After Your Porcelain Veneers

Commitment to a good oral care regime will ensure the esthetic success of your porcelain veneers.

Here are some simple maintenance tips to keep your smile healthy and beautiful:

  • Brush and floss regularly to maintain your oral health and prevent any dental problems.
  • If you clench or grind your teeth, let your dentist know. We can fabricate a customized mouthguard for you to wear to minimize the stress placed upon your teeth while you sleep, ensuring the longevity of the veneers.
  • 1 week after your veneer procedure, visit your dentist for a checkup. This gives us the opportunity to evaluate the placement of your veneers, the gum tissue response and to answer any questions you may have.
  • Regular maintenance and dental checkups are highly recommended so that your porcelain veneers and oral health can be reviewed periodically.
