5 Key Things You Need to Know About Invisalign Before Committing

Are you considering an Invisalign treatment as an adult? Here’s everything you need to know about this innovative cosmetic dentistry procedure so you can make the most informed decision about whether or not it’s right for you.

While there are several dental treatments available to help you straighten your teeth, Invisalign is the only clear option that is free of brackets and wires. These clear aligners allow you to work, eat, and participate in social situations worry free, all while giving you the perfect smile.

If you are considering an Invisalign treatment, some of the benefits include:

  • They’re made of a smooth plastic, making them more comfortable than metal braces
  • The completely clear aligners will not detract from your smile
  • They’re removable, making eating, brushing, and flossing your teeth easier
  • Unlike with metal braces, Invisalign doesn’t come with any food restrictions

Invisalign offers many benefits to the wearer, including enhanced flexibility and comfort, which is why they are so widely recommended to patients who are suitable for such a treatment.

5 Things You Should Know About Invisalign Before Committing

The popularity of Invisalign has increased greatly over the past few years and many people, mostly adults, have adopted it as an alternative to traditional metal braces as a way to straighten out their teeth and achieve the perfect smile.

While this innovative orthodontic treatment certainly has many benefits, as with any treatment, it’s important to understand what you should fully expect from Invisalign before deciding if it is the right option for you.

Before committing, here are 5 things you should know about the Invisalign treatment:

  1. The aligner trays are custom made: Before the treatment begins, you and your dentist will work hand in hand to make moulds for your mouth. This mould will then be used to create fully customized alignment trays that will suit your requirements perfectly.
  2. The aligners have to be worn almost full time: The aligners must be worn for at least 22 hours every day. You should only take them off when you eat or drink anything. If you don’t wear them regularly, the treatment won’t work properly and it will most likely take longer than planned.
  3. You can eat anything you want: When you have clear braces, all you need to do is pop out the trays when you eat, so there is no limitation on food. However, you must clean your aligners and brush your teeth after each snack, meal, or drink. If you don’t, you risk leaving sugars, acids, and bacteria on your teeth for several hours, which can increase your risk of tooth decay and plaque.
  4. You may experience some minor discomfort: Generally, Invisalign is not as uncomfortable as metal braces because there are no wires or brackets to cause irritation in your mouth. However, some patients may experience some discomfort because your teeth are being forced a certain way by the aligners. This is likely to come with some slight pain.
  5. You’ll have to wear a retainer: As soon as you finish your final cycle of aligners, you may think that the treatment has ended, but that is not true. For the results of your invisible braces to stay effective, you’ll require a retainer. If you don’t wear this, your teeth may go back to their initial position, which would mean a wasted investment.
